Do You Have A Police/fire/ambulance/air-traf… Scanner… And Why?
I’m listening to mine right now… we always have it on. In fact, last night, some idiot neighbor was doing some “late night” burning of their fields (farming country) and the flames got out of control. The fire department was having difficulty locating the fire, which was about 1/2 mile from our house… and because we had our scanner on, I was able to call 9-1-1 and inform them of the exact location, to GET there QUICKER!
So… do YOU have such a scanner? WHY? Have you ever done something like I did last night? Would you ever want to see them banned from private use?

I can see how it was both a good and bad thing what you did. You helped the fire fighters figure out where to go, but yes I imagine some enthousiasts do crowd the scene when emergency vehicles are trying to save lives. Just go with what you’ve been told here, kudos for helping out, just don’t crowd their way. The only thing I have to add is…
2NEVER transmit on an air traffic control frequency unless you’re in an air traffic control facility, airplane or authorized airport vehicle.
You did the right thing, you called and gave a heads up. I’m sure the local FD is thankful as is your neighbor.
Don’t you know there’s high quality, intelligent programming on television? Things like wrestling, and reruns of “Full House,” and infomercials starring Chuck Norris.
3Yes, i have a police scanner, but I dont listen to it anymore because Im being good now.
4I do not. While I laud your efforts for doing what you did..a scanner should not have been necessary to call in information.
5I will tell you why I am not in favour of such devices. As a former paramedic, having to deal with gawkers who raced to the scene of a horrible tragedy made our lives extremely difficult. In several cases..the gawkers themselves became victims and added to the tragedy. One other point..having to spend money scrambling a radio signal to assist in protecting someone’s privacy..is a waste which could have gone towards hiring more staff or purchasing more equipment. May sound silly..but every cent counts.

I love listening to them and I did have one but the one I had you can no longer get calls on it like you used to, and I don’t have the money to spend on a really nice one. As far as why, mainly for the neighborhood, I’m your neighborhood watch dog
