Distance From Others After Calypso Prostate Cancer Treatment?

October 20, 2009 By: admin Category: Health

My father in law just underwent the Calypso treatment for his prostate cancer. It’s an electromagnetic ‘gps’ inserted into the tumor or prostate that allows the doctors to pinpoint the tumor while radiating, salvaging the healthy cells.
My questions is….what are the specifics behind how long and how far away (if at all) he must stay from pregnant women and young children. I understand there are guidelines for other types of ‘seed’ radiation treatments for prostate cancer, but I can’t seem to find any details for Calypso. Anyone with experience in this field or experienced this personally?

Is There An Alternative Prostate Cancer Treatment For Alcoholics?

October 19, 2009 By: admin Category: Health

My father in law had his prostate removed 7 years ago. About a year and a half his PSA started rising again so they did three rounds of radiation treatment. His PSA continues to rise, so they chemically castrated him. It seems the cancer has become immune to the lack of testosterone and his PSA level doubled last month. At this point it appears the cancer is systemic but unfortunately it has not manifest itself yet so they don’t know where it is.
The problem: he is an alcoholic and chemotherapy isn’t an option due to existing liver damage. Even if he quit drinking today, his liver couldn’t handle the chemo so my question is:
Is there an alternative prostate cancer treatment for people with liver damage?

Decision On Prostate Cancer Treatment?

October 13, 2009 By: admin Category: Health

My brother is 54 yrs old and was just diagnosed with prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 5. His PSA was 4.25. The biopsy showed that he only had traces of cancer on the right side of his prostate and it was limited to that area. He is in excellent health and very active, and has not shown any signs of any urinary problems.
He is considering the treatment option of “watchful waiting”. What are your thoughts on this vs possibly robotic surgery? Some doctors prefer surgery when the patient is this young. Thanks for your inputs on this.

What Does Treatment For Prostate Cancer Consist Of, And Does It Affect A Male’s Ability To Have Sex?

October 11, 2009 By: admin Category: Health

A very close friend of ours has been diagnosed with prostate cancer (it really *isn’t* my partner or me!) and we were wondering what his treatment options might be.
If the prostate gland is removed, does that eliminate the ability to have sex?
Probably best to have an older person answer this: it’s pretty obvious by the question that this is going to be completely out of the realm of experience for most of the teenagers.

How Will I Know If Prostate Cancer Treatment Has Helped?

October 10, 2009 By: admin Category: Health

I have had 41 external beam radiation treatments, 25 full pelvic treatments and 16 “Boost” treatments aimed at the prostate only. I am receiving hormone therapy also that requires one shot every three months. So far I have had two treatments.
When I was first diagnosed, my Urologist said three hormone treatments was all I could have as more would cause brittle bones. Now, this same doctor says I may have to take these shots for the rest of my life. When I asked how I would know if treatments have helped, he replied six months after I’m off the hormones a PSA test would tell. Now that’s really a Catch 22.
Has anyone experianced these same treatments and what are your results?

An Airline That Will Allow A Cancer Patient To Fly From Lanzarote To Scotland??

August 10, 2009 By: admin Category: Health

a relative of mines moved to Lanzarote almost 3 years ago. He has recently been diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma, a quite rare type of cancer. He now wishes to come home, but almost no airlines will allow him on the flight with oxygen. Does anyone know of anywhere that can help? From a charity to a major airline, he will do anything to get home, as the average time for survival of this type of cancer is 9 months. He has had this for 8 months, so there is a certain sense of urgency about this.
Please help. Thanks

Does Someone Who Suffer From Cancer Become A More Agressive Person?

August 10, 2009 By: admin Category: Health

My dad suffers from a malignant type cancer (mesothelioma), and he is on chemotherapy. It seems that everyday he becomes more angry and more agressive towards everybody. Is this due to his cancer or chemo? My mom and I are deeply saddened by his condition, but everyday he screams and yells at us for no reason. Is there something else that we can do to help him? I feel even more sorry for my mom because she is the one who receives the most insults by my dad. I see her cry everyday because of that. What can we do?

Lung Cancer – Mesothelioma? Do You Know Much About It?

July 21, 2009 By: admin Category: Health

I have been lucky, and have not had to deal with the nastiness of cancer. My grandpa has Mesothelioma, the cancer from asbestos. He has been in Stage 4 for the past 3 years and has defied all of the odds. They originally only gave him a couple months to a year to live, but Chemo has worked wonders. He just had a scan and the results showed it has increased in size significantly, so the last round of Chemo didn’t work. This has caused his ability to breathe to decrease, and the changed his Chemo. He had his treatment with the new stuff on Friday, and they rushed him to the hospital today because of his inability to breathe.
My question is are these signs of the beginning of the end? I know this form of cancer will eventually suffocate him, and he does have a living will, so oxygen is the only form of assistance he will receive. How long will oxygen help? I am very saddened by all of this and would hate to see him suffer for long like this. He is a good man and doesn’t deserve to die like this. Do your organs shut down due to lack of oxygen? Anyone with experience with Mesothelioma or that knows about this and can give me some insight, I’d appreciate any details no matter how graphic. I just want to know what to expect.

How Frequently Does Asbestosis Develop Into Diseases Such As Lung Cancer Or Mesothelioma?

July 02, 2009 By: admin Category: Health

This would depend on the severity of the asbestosis, i.e. some sufferers can have a mild widespread scarring of the lungs over a life time. However smokers who continue smoking after they have been diagnosed with asbestosis have a fifty five percent higher chance of developing cancer and mesothelioma – particularly if the person smokes more than 20 per day.
Tobacco smoke and asbestos both contribute to each other’s cancer-causing carcinogenic effects, hence, both risk factors combined is more dangerous than the effects of one risk factor alone.
