Why Is Methadone Used For Addiction Treatment When It Happens To Be An Opiate Just Like Heroin?

October 24, 2009 By: admin Category: Health

Wouldn’t people get addicted to methadone too? I know people started out believing that heroin is some kind of treatment for morphine addiction. What if methadone is the same way? I’m just really curious.

I see your point and to an extent I agree with you. I was actually telling a friend this hypothesis just the other day. Methadone CAN be addicting, and people are already producing it on the black market as a recreational drug. Apparently the recreational/street form is slightly different than the medically administered form though…I think the street form is more addicting.
I think the biggest problem with Methadone isn’t its addictive properties, but how well it is controlled. The fact that people are trying to produce and sell it on the streets as a recreational drug, shows that it is not well controlled.

Methadone has already been proven to be safe and effective which is why it is used for addiction treatment. For so long as methadone is properly prescribed, it won’t be sedating nor intoxicating. Its effects will not get in the way of normal activities. Its taken orally and prevents withdrawal symptoms for as long as 24 to 36 hours. Aside from that, when methadone is taken, it relieves the individual’s heroin craving, the biggest cause for relapse. It is also medically safe, so even if people use it for ten years straight, it’s okay. With the help of counseling and therapy, methadone will be able to bring people back their productivity and sober lives.

It is actually not much like heroin at all. it has a much longer half life . and there is no euphoric effects from it like you get from heroin. It will make you slightly drowsy if you take to much.On the other hand like heroin it can cause an overdose. when detoxing off methadone it takes longer than heroin. heroin has a 6-8 hr anelgeasic effect where methadone is more along a 4-6 hr max.But the methadone will allow you not to experiance any withdrawl symptons for up to 24-36 hrs depending on the dose and person taking it.There is a common misconception that people cant leave a normal life while on methadone nothing is furthur from the truth. i have been in treatment for over 10 yrs now and get up and go to work every day like any one else i pay my bills and take care of my family.and every day when i get up out of bed i take 80 mgs of methadone. the main reason they use this instead of opiates is that it only requires a once a day dose where opiate maintnenece programs require the client come in 2-3 times a day to recieve their med’s. But they have had better results in opiate maintenence programs than with the methadone you can see the results of the study i am refering to at the NAOMI PROJECT web site all info on the successes and failure’s of opiate and methaodne maintenence is on the N.P site.

Could you please post a link to where you got the info on people producing bootleg methadone. I have been involved in and studied the drug trade in america since the mid 1970′s and have never heard of bootlegged methadone produced outside a pharma co. I would also like you to show evidence of any drug being actually controlled in america that is not aval on the street. Methadone is the most regulated substance in the U.S.A. only plutonium has more regulations regarding it’s production and sale. which just goes to show the pointlessness of the war on drugs even when you have numerous rules and reg’s regarding a medication if some one wants it some one will sell it.the desire to alter ones conciensce is uncontrollable on all level’s when america realizes this and starts treating substance abuse as a medical condition and let people who are trained to handle medical problems take care of these people then we will begin to make some progress cops judges and lawyers are not doctors and have no buisness acting like or saying they know whats best for a person who has a substance abuse problem . unless that persons use has caused physical or financial harm to some one else
